Types of Pregnancies and Why It Matters To Know
The journey to motherhood is one marred with expectations and anxiety. It is a moment of high hopes and anticipated joy. On the extreme side, however, it is quite unfortunate that not all mothers get the chance to hold their ‘bundle of joy’ at delivery. Some pregnancies just don’t happen right, leading to miscarriage, while others have to be terminated in their early stages. Some of the factors contributing to the different types of pregnancies include, multiple eggs/sperm during fertilization, differences in hormones and reproductive systems in women, and underlying health conditions, among others.
At times, it is hard to understand the happenings around pregnancy, or even the risk factors that come in handy when one is pregnant. It is always advisable to seek a specialist to walk with you during your pregnancy to ensure your baby is growing right and mitigate risks of complications. As it is not always that pregnancies go right, knowing the different types of pregnancies and the circumstances under which they happen can help address individual scenarios and, with the help of a specialist, increase the chances of survival in troubled pregnancies. Below are some of the most common types of pregnancies you are likely to hear of.
1. Intrauterine pregnancy
Intrauterine pregnancy is the ideal form of pregnancy, whereby the fertilized egg gets implanted inside the uterus and develop normally.
2.Ectopic pregnancy
Ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus. A most common form of ectopic pregnancy is the tubal pregnancy, where implantation occurs in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus. Ectopic pregnancies are not viable, and in the case a miscarriage does not happen, the pregnancy has to be terminated.
3.Molar pregnancy
A molar pregnancy happens in two forms: complete and partial, where the embryo and the placenta develop abnormally and may result in a tumor. The pregnancy ends up in miscarriage, or an abortion may be initiated as it is not viable.
4.Lupus pregnancy
This is a type of pregnancy common in women with lupus disease. It’s a high-risk pregnancy that demands the intervention of a health specialist.
5.Chemical pregnancy
While most pregnancies are detectable through an ultrasound, a chemical pregnancy is not detectable and is lost almost immediately after implantation.
6.High-risk pregnancy
Most high-risk pregnancies are common in women around and above the age of 35 years, those with underlying health conditions or cases of multiple fetuses, and, at times, prior childbirth complications.
7.Singlet pregnancy
A Singlet pregnancy is a normal and viable pregnancy. It occurs where a single egg is fertilized by a single sperm and one fetus develops thereof.
8.Multiple pregnancy
Unlike a Singlet pregnancy, multiple pregnancy happens when one fertilized egg splits resulting into two or more embryos, or two different eggs are fertilized by two different sperms forming twin babies.
9.Breech pregnancy
In a scenario where the fetus has the head positioned at the upper side of the uterus contrary to normal pregnancies where the head faces downwards/ birth canal ready for delivery such, is known as breech pregnancy.
As evidenced above, not all pregnancies go as smoothly as every mother would wish for. Walking the journey to the end and giving birth to a healthy baby is by far a miracle and a gift.
